Tragic Death of Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota in Car Accident




Liverpool FC is mourning the tragic loss of forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at approximately 12:30 AM local time on the A-52 motorway in Cernadilla, Zamora. Jota's 25-year-old brother, Andre Silva, a footballer with Liga Portugal 2 side Penafiel, was also killed in the accident.


According to reports from the Civil Guard in Zamora, the vehicle that Jota and his brother were traveling in left the road and caught fire after a suspected burst tire while overtaking. The authorities confirmed that both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jota was reportedly traveling from Portugal to Santander, where he was set to take a ferry back to England. He had recently undergone minor surgery and was advised against flying. He was due to return to Liverpool's training ground for pre-season preparations with his teammates next week.

The news of Jota's death has sent shockwaves throughout the football community. Liverpool released a statement expressing their devastation over the loss, stating, "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. Jota had a successful career since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020. Over his tenure at Anfield, he made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals, contributing significantly to the club's success. Prior to his time at Liverpool, Jota also played for Pacos de Ferreira, Porto, and Atletico Madrid.

In addition to his club achievements, Jota was a key player for the Portugal national team, scoring 14 goals in 49 appearances and recently winning the UEFA Nations League for the second time in June.
